Maculopathy and Elmiron
In 2018, Dr. Nieraj Jain, who worked at the Emory Eye Center in Atlanta, Georgia, noticed that 6 of their patients all had abnormal damage to their retinas and were diagnosed with pigmentary maculopathy. These patients were seen by the Center from 2015 to 2017. Dr. Jain and a team of researchers noticed that all of their patients had used the drug Elmiron for a median number of 16 years.
They issued a warning call and a report on the link between chronic exposure to Elmiron and the development of pigmentary maculopathy that the American Academy of Ophthalmology published in the November issue of Ophthalmology in 2018. In 2019, one of the researchers issued an update to show that ten patients had been diagnosed with pigmentary maculopathy.
Pigmentary maculopathy is a new disease that develops from chronic exposure to Elmiron, the drug pentosan polysulfate sodium (PPS). There’s only a simple mention of vision problems as an “other†medical problem on the Mayo Clinic’s website, and a search for “pigmentary maculopathy†yielded no results.
It’s that new. We consider pigmentary maculopathy a novel disease, meaning that it has not been previously recorded. The researchers proved that Elmiron was the only cause of pigmentary maculopathy on record, meaning that it is the cause of the disease beyond a reasonable doubt. When Did the Elmiron Lawsuit Start?
Tina Pisco filed the first Elmiron lawsuit on May 4, 2020, claiming that the drug caused her to develop maculopathy. She began taking it in 2012, and her vision began to deplete over six years since she began treatment with Elmiron.
